In October 1991, a Radium Institute team delivered a special detection cart deep into the remains of Reactor Unit 4 to find an answer to a defining question: how much nuclear fuel remained inside the destroyed reactor? One of the most difficult places to study was Shield E — the massive upper biological shield of the reactor, better known as “Elena.” After the Chernobyl disaster, hundreds of wrecked fuel channels remained attached to it, emitting extremely high levels of radiation. Direct inspection was impossible. To solve this, physicists built a motorized cart equipped with a video camera and a special detector — almost like a radiation telescope. The problem was that they had to deliver it by hand, through highly radioactive debris, and in this episode, we analyze this dramatic journey step by step. The operation was carried out by Boris Petrov, Leonid Pleskachevsky, Alexander Prusakov, Georgy Boykov, and Sergey Dzyvolyan.
