        <title>We Rebuilt Chornobyl’s SKALA! | Chernobyl Reactor at Home Part 2</title>

        <description>This video continues our long-term project to build a functional hardware simulator of a Chornobyl RBMK reactor control room. In the first part, we built a functional replica of an RBMK reactor control panel. Now it is time to give it a brain. We have recreated the operator console for SKALA — the computer system used to monitor the RBMK reactors of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Our simulator can process thousands of reactor parameters. It allows us to enter real SKALA request codes, retrieve values, check warning and emergency setpoints, monitor individual reactor channels, launch programs, and investigate potentially dangerous conditions inside the reactor core. In this episode, we demonstrate how operators used SKALA to check reactor thermal power, coolant flow, control-rod positions, energy distribution, channel power, and the margin before a boiling crisis. We also show how the system could identify specific channels requiring attention and send them to the enormous reactor-channel mnemonic displays known as MTK. The console will eventually be connected to our reactor control panel, SKALA status display, and a complete scaled replica of an MTK. Together, they will form one interconnected simulator of an RBMK reactor control room. This project was created with the invaluable help of former and current experts from the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant who worked with this technology and helped us reconstruct many details that were never properly documented.
