Once home to more than 10,000 people, the town was not evacuated immediately after the 1986 disaster. Some families displaced from Pripyat were even resettled here, while new homes and infrastructure continued to be built. Only during the final years of the Soviet Union did the true scale of the contamination become openly acknowledged. What followed was not a sudden evacuation, but a gradual resettlement that lasted for years. As people left, much of the town was dismantled, while the remaining buildings were abandoned to decay. In 1999, Poliske was officially removed from the register of populated places. Located around 60 kilometres west of Chornobyl, Poliske belongs to the Zone of Obligatory (Unconditional) Resettlement. It feels very different from Pripyat: not frozen in a single moment, but slowly emptied, dismantled and forgotten. This immersive video was filmed in Poliske in 2017.
