The Last Alarm of Chernobyl’s SKALA Computer

In this episode, we recreate the alarm sound of the SKALA computer system from Chernobyl Reactor 4 — based on original circuit diagrams preserved from the plant. This simple device was responsible for signaling malfunctions in one of the most important control systems of the reactor. And based on the known timeline of the disaster, it is very possible that this alarm was among the last sounds heard before SKALA went offline. We show how the original circuit works, explain its components, and assemble a working replica using period-correct parts, including MP26B transistors, P702 germanium power transistors, and a 4GD-35 speaker. The video also explores where this system was physically located, how it interacted with the SKALA mnemonic panels, and what happened to it in the first seconds after the explosion. It is an attempt to reconstruct a small but very real fragment of the final moments of Chernobyl Reactor 4. Upcoming: a full working replica of the SKALA mnemonic display system.
