We transcribed and restored a previously lost audio tape recorded in 1987 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A person speaking is Michael Umanets – the second post-disaster director. What is being said is a chance to get an insight into how things were going there just one year after the Chernobyl accident. At the time this was recorded, the situation at the Chernobyl Zone passed the hardest point. It became clear that there won't be any return to the city of Pripyat apart from using it for operative purposes. Most of the power plant workers at that time either were deployed to the Green Cape semi-permanent camp located at Strakholissya village or started to receive apartments in larger cities. The power plant operated by longer shifts instead of the classical 8+8+8 hours scheme. The construction of a new, replacement city – Slavutich – has been ongoing. Its very remote location and a large distance from any large cities caused a massive reluctance of the NPP employees to move there voluntarily. This speech seems to be a focal point of this situation, as the management of the power plant attempted to apply a repressive force on these people, giving them the choice to either submit to movement or leave the Chornobyl NPP. At the same time, there were raised a few more questions, such as a low qualification of new staff. As the power plant faced a decrease in its skilled employees, it needed to turn to free hiring, which caused issues. Original audio has been recorded over at least a few previous (and much distorted) records, including a talk with self-settlers and a comment of an unknown reporter about a morning in Chernobyl town. These fragments are not included in this very video and are available on Patreon. Join us on Patreon for an insider look at the Zone: https://patreon.com/thechernobylfamily
