https://tube.loping.net/videos/watch/fc421cec-1c59-4b6a-8ad6-b678b9ac44ab In this episode, we explore how the Chernobyl disaster could have been reflected by the SKALA computer system — through the status display that indicated the operation of the reactor control computer in real time. This device, installed in the SKALA computer hall at each RBMK unit, was responsible for visualizing the state of processors, programs, peripherals, and dozens of interconnected subsystems. Based on original documentation and known operation algorithms, we recreated a fully functional replica of this mnemonic display and demonstrate how it works. We go through each part of the panel in detail: processor states, program execution cycles, teletypes and tape drives, restriction indicators, and the system of 24 functional control groups that connected the computer to sensors across the reactor. The video also explains how SKALA interacted with other systems in the control room, including MTK channel displays and alarm panels, and shows how signals were routed, processed, and visualized during operation. While the original display remains entombed inside the Sarcophagus, this reconstruction allows us to better understand how fast events developed during the accident — and how they were reflected inside the control system itself. This replica display will be integrated with a fully functional replica of the SKALA controls we are building in our lab.
